Texas Roadhouse is a western-style chain of restaurants based in the United States. According to Wikipedia, there are over 560 locations across the globe with most of them in the United States. Texas Roadhouse is known for their free bucket of peanuts on each table and their rolls. While plant-based options seem to be far and few between at these steak-based restaurants, this article looks at the 5 vegan options at Texas Roadhouse as of January 2022.

Texas Roadhouse does not provide complete allergen or ingredient information guides on their website, so we reached out to the Texas Roadhouse support team for help identifying vegan-friendly options at their restaurants. The following is the initial reply we received from a Guest Relations Coordinator named Stephanie.
Hi there Braden! Thank you for reaching out! I am so sorry to bear the bad news, but unfortunately we really have no vegan options. We could provide a salad with oil and vinegar with add ons like tomatoes or onions, corn with no butter, veggies no butter and I am sure the manager can help with anything else. We do have a veggie plate option where you can pick 4 side items. I wish I had more good news! But our salads are delicious! Thank you for being a legendary guest!
With this information in hand, the following sections provide a breakdown of the vegan options available at Texas Roadhouse. As Stephanie mentioned, Texas Roadhouse has a “Country Veg Plate” that allows you to choose 4 side options for a cheaper price than ordering them alone. We would recommend this options as almost all the items below are listed as sides.
Update February 2020
A current Texas Roadhouse employee reached out to us to clarify whether some of the menu items are vegan or not (thanks Nicole!). The following are items are NOT vegan friendly:
- Baked Potato is baked with bacon grease
- Sweet Potato is baked with bacon grease
- Green Beans are cooked in ham broth
- Seasoned Rice is cooked in chicken stock
- Mashed Potatoes are cooked in chicken broth
- Rolls are bushed with butter
Since all of the potato items at Texas Roadhouse are cooked with animal products, the veg items are even more limited than previously thought.
Update January 2021
A Veg Knowledge reader reached out to let us know that her local Texas Roadhouse informed her that all of the veggies are pre-cooked in butter and the ones that are not cannot be steamed. So that left only a plain salad as the vegan option. (Thanks Andrea!) This location was in Surfside Beach, SC and this contradicts the information received from our local Texas Roadhouse so please make sure to ask you local store what vegan options are available!
1. Peanuts
2. House Salad (No Cheese, Eggs or Croutons)
3. Fresh Vegetables (No Butter)
4. Buttered Corn (No Butter)
Texas Roadhouse as a side of Buttered Corn which can be made vegan by removing the butter according to the Texas Roadhouse representative we spoke to.
5. Margaritas
Not Vegan: Potato Products
Per our February 2020 update, both the Plain Baked Potato and Plain Sweet Potato are baked with bacon grease and are NOT vegetarian or vegan friendly. The Mashed Potatoes are also NOT vegetarian or vegan friendly since they are cooked with chicken stock.
Other Potentially Vegan Options
In addition to the items mentioned already, there are a couple of options on the Texas Roadhouse menu that could be vegan. The representative we talked said to ask a manager at each location for the specific ingredients in all of the products. As such, ask a manager about the following menu items before ordering to ensure they meet your dietary needs.
Sides
- Apple Sauce
- Steak Fries
Summary
Unfortunately, there are very few vegan options at Texas Roadhouse. Your best bet is to stick to side options and verify with your waiter or manager that the items you want are free of all animal-derived products.
